From Lead Diggings to Farm Shops

Epoxy flooring in Benton covers a lot of working floors. The village sits in the southwest corner of Lafayette County, close to the Illinois line, inside the Town of Benton. The area was settled for its lead, starting with the Murphy family homestead in 1827 and a rush of miners after the Black Hawk War. The early name was Swindler's Ridge. It was later renamed for Missouri senator Thomas Hart Benton. Today the town's economy runs on farming and modern business, and farms need shops.

Farm shops and machine sheds

The Town of Benton covers about 28 square miles of land around the village. Out there, the concrete that matters most is often in a shop or machine shed. These floors take a beating:

  • Tractors, skid loaders and trucks parked and worked on
  • Hydraulic fluid, diesel and grease dripping onto the slab
  • Mud, manure and snowmelt carried in on tires
  • Welding sparks, dropped parts and floor jacks

Bare concrete soaks all of that up and turns dark and slick. A coated floor wipes clean and makes it easier to spot a leak. For shops, we build a thicker epoxy base and use a topcoat made to resist fuel and oil. We add a grit or flake broadcast in the wet areas so the floor is not slippery when snowmelt comes off a machine.

Village garages

The 2010 census counted 426 housing units in the village. Many garages here park pickups that spend the winter on Wisconsin Highway 11 and county roads. A flake floor hides salt film, mud and tire marks between cleanings. A polyaspartic topcoat can put the garage back in service sooner, which helps when you need to park a truck that night.

Basements

Basement floors in Benton get a moisture reading before we price them. A dry slab can take a solid epoxy for a laundry room, workshop or storage area. A wet one may need a different primer, or the water problem fixed first. We will tell you which at the estimate.

Repair comes first

Old slabs on farms and in town often have wide cracks, broken edges at the door and low spots that hold water. We fill and grind those before any coating. If a crack keeps moving, we will say so and suggest fixing the cause before coating.

A note on local history

Pioneer priest Father Samuel Mazzuchelli founded St. Patrick's parish in Benton and is buried in its cemetery. The Galena River, also called the Fever River in early records, drains the town and flows south toward the Mississippi. It is a place with long roots, and many of the buildings we work in have been standing for generations.

What the estimate covers

We walk the floor with you and note every crack, stain and low spot. We take a moisture reading, measure the space and ask what the building is used for day to day. A shop that parks a combine needs a different build than a garage with one pickup in it. You get a written quote that lists the grinding, the repairs, each coat and the total, so you can compare it line by line.

Benton Questions

Will epoxy hold up on a farm shop floor in Benton?

Yes, if the system is built for it. We use a thicker base coat and a topcoat that resists fuel, oil and hydraulic fluid, and we add grit where floors get wet. Bare dirt or gravel floors cannot be coated, only concrete.

Can you coat a machine shed with big cracks?

Usually. Stable cracks get filled and ground flush first. If a crack is still moving or a section has heaved, we will tell you and recommend repair before coating.
