A River Village With Old Buildings and Busy Floors

Epoxy flooring in Potosi has to work in some of the oldest buildings in Grant County. The village formed in 1841 when three mining camps from the 1830s, Head of the Hollow, Van Buren and Lafayette, merged into one. It sits where Wisconsin's lead ore belt meets the Mississippi River. Homes and shops line a Main Street that stretches about three miles, split into North Main and South Main, and local signs call it the longest Main Street in the world.

Old homes and an older population

The 2010 census counted 322 housing units in Potosi and a median age of 45.3, older than most nearby villages. For many owners, that means a house that has been in the family a long time and a basement or garage floor that shows it. It also means some people want a floor that is easier to keep clean and safer to walk on.

Here is what we tend to suggest:

  • Basement floors: a moisture test first, then a solid epoxy if the slab is dry. A bright floor makes a stairwell and laundry area easier to see.
  • Garage floors: a flake system, which hides salt film and gives better footing on wet winter days.
  • Slip resistance: a fine aggregate in the topcoat for anyone worried about a fall on a smooth floor.

Basements in a river valley

Potosi sits beside the Mississippi, and its oldest neighborhood was named Head of the Hollow. Older basements in a valley setting are often damp, and moisture coming up through the slab is the main reason coatings bubble or peel. We take a reading before quoting anything. If a floor is too wet, we will say so and talk about what has to happen first. Sometimes that is a vapor-tolerant primer. Sometimes the water problem needs fixing before any coating is worth the money.

Business floors on Main Street

The Potosi Brewery shows how hard a commercial floor can work. Beer was first brewed in the building in 1852, and it ran until 1972. After a $7.5 million restoration, it reopened in 2008 as a brewpub and the home of the National Brewery Museum, and a new production facility opened in 2015. Restaurants, taverns, shops and garages along Main Street have the same needs on a smaller scale:

  • Kitchens and back rooms that get mopped daily and see grease and hot water
  • Storage rooms with carts and kegs rolling across them
  • Service garages with oil, fuel and road salt
  • Retail floors that need to look clean with steady foot traffic

For these, we use thicker epoxy systems with chemical-resistant topcoats and add texture where floors get wet. We can schedule around business hours to keep downtime short.

Mining ground under the hills

The ridge above the village still holds the Potosi Badger Huts Site, with remains of two rock-walled huts and about 100 old diggings and shafts from the early lead boom of the 1830s and 1840s. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also a reminder that this is old, worked ground. If a slab has settled or cracked badly, we will point it out at the estimate and recommend repair before coating.

Potosi Questions

My Potosi basement feels damp. Can it still be coated?

Maybe. We measure the moisture in the slab before recommending anything. Some damp floors can take a primer made for moisture. Floors with water coming in need that fixed first, and we will tell you plainly if that is the case.

Do you coat restaurant and tavern floors?

Yes. Kitchens, back rooms and storage areas get a thicker epoxy with a chemical-resistant topcoat and added grip. We can plan the work around your hours.
