Fast Cure for a Short Coating Season
Polyaspartic floor coating is a type of polyurea that cures much faster than standard epoxy. HomeGuide's cost guide says it reaches full cure in about 24 to 48 hours, compared with up to a week for epoxy, and that it can be applied across a temperature range of roughly -30°F to 140°F. That matters in Dubuque, where the warm months are short and many people want the garage floor done before the first snow.
How it compares with epoxy
Epoxy and polyaspartic often work together. Epoxy builds thickness, about 10 to 20 mils per coat according to HomeGuide, and bonds well to ground concrete. Polyaspartic goes on thinner, about 2 to 6 mils per coat, but it holds its color in sunlight and resists abrasion. HomeGuide rates its UV resistance as excellent and epoxy's as poor to fair. On many Dubuque garages we use an epoxy base with a polyaspartic topcoat. On others we use polyaspartic for every layer, which gets the floor back in use faster.
When polyaspartic is the right call
- You need the garage or shop back quickly, often within a day or two
- The job falls in early spring or late fall, when slabs are cool
- The floor gets sun through an open door or windows and you want to avoid yellowing
- You want a clear coat over flakes that keeps its gloss
- A business cannot close for a full week
What it asks of the installer
Fast cure has a cost. Polyaspartic has a short working time once mixed, so it has to be mixed in small batches and spread quickly and evenly. HomeGuide does not rate it as DIY-friendly. The prep is the same as any coating: diamond grinding, crack repair and a clean, dry surface. A fast-curing product does nothing for a floor that was not ground properly.
Cool weather in the Tri-State Area
Dubuque's climate has four distinct seasons, and January nights average about 11 degrees Fahrenheit. Many coating products list minimum slab temperatures above what an unheated garage reaches in late fall. Polyaspartic gives more room to work. We still check the slab temperature and the dew point the day of the job, since moisture can condense on a cold slab and hurt the bond. If the numbers are wrong, we reschedule.
Where we use it
Most polyaspartic jobs we do are garages, either as a full system or as the topcoat over epoxy and flake. We also use it in sunrooms and porches on concrete, in shops that need to reopen quickly, and in commercial spaces like dealerships and salons where a long closure costs money. For heavy industrial loads, a thicker epoxy base underneath usually makes sense.

Polyaspartic Floor Coating Questions
Is polyaspartic better than epoxy for a garage floor?
Each has strengths. HomeGuide notes polyaspartic cures in 1 to 2 days and resists UV well, while epoxy builds a thicker coat per layer and costs a little less. A common choice is an epoxy base with a polyaspartic topcoat.
How much does a polyaspartic garage floor cost?
HomeGuide puts installed polyaspartic at about $5 to $12 per square foot, or about $2,000 to $6,900 for a two-car garage. Repairs and heavy prep can add $1 to $5 per square foot.
Can polyaspartic go down in cold weather?
It has a much wider application range than epoxy. HomeGuide lists about -30°F to 140°F. We still check slab temperature and dew point on the day of the install.
Can I put polyaspartic down myself?
HomeGuide does not consider it DIY-friendly. It sets up fast once mixed, so it has to be spread quickly and evenly in small batches.
